Huntsville Roofers insulation coversInsulation cover boards are a requirement for roof warranties by several roofing manufacturers. Single or double-layered insulation gives added protection to the house roof. Getting a cover board installed by Huntsville roofers can result in long-term energy savings and an increased lifespan of the roof. Many different types of insulation cover boards are available that are suitable for diverse applications. You should be aware of the different types of cover boards so that you select the best one for your home.

1. Perlite

Perlite is a type of fibrous insulation that is made of both natural and synthetic materials. The synthetic material includes a siliceous volcanic glass that is added to wood fiber. The materials are joined with asphaltic binders. Perlite cover boards offer excellent fire-resistance capabilities. They can change dimensions when exposed to moisture. To avoid moisture damage, a vapor barrier is generally installed between the insulation material and the roof.

2. Gypsum

Gypsum fiber cover boards provide unmatched insulation properties against hail and high winds.  The product is made of a fiber-reinforced gypsum material. They also provide protection against mold and moisture on the roof. Cover boards with a gypsum core and glass-mat also offer great protection against mold and moisture. You can buy a cover board with unprimed or primed glass facer. An unprimed facer is mechanically attached to the cover board, while a primed facer adheres to the membrane without any mechanical bonding.

3. Cement

Cement cover boards are typically made of reinforcement mesh that results in added strength. The material gives protection against moisture. It will not warp, rot, disintegrate, or delaminate upon exposure to wet conditions.

4. Wood Fiber

A wood fiber cover board is made of an organic roof insulation material, typically cane or wood. Asphalt is sometimes added to the material that results in increased moisture-resistant properties. Adding an asphalt coating also improves the bonding quality of the cover board. An advantage of using wood fiber insulation material is that it adheres well to the roof with mechanical attachment. The material adheres well to metal decks that require mechanical bonding. Moreover, the material has good laminar and compressive strength.

5. Composite Boards

Composite boards use polyisocyanurate as an insulation material. The cover boards have multiple properties that make them suitable for installation in different locations.  The top layer of the material serves as a great substrate for adhered membrane systems.

6. Dens-Deck

Dens-deck is another type of cover board with excellent insulation properties. The roofing material is made up of a high fire-resistant, non-structural glass mat that is applied over a gypsum core panel. The core panel is typically treated with silicone to give added strength. The roofing material provides excellent puncture and impact resistance. They are also durable, providing long-lasting protection to the roof.

7. High-Density Polyisocyanurate Cover Boards

High-density insulation boards are relatively new to the market. They are generally made of compressed polyisocyanurate core, which makes make them lightweight. On average, a high-density cover board material weighs 80 percent less as compared to other materials of the same size. Additionally, high-density cover boards boast high moisture-resistance. The material has a water absorption by volume rate of just four percent that is much less as compared to other materials. The material also has a high R-value, making them an excellent insulation material. The thermal resistance of the material is about two to five times more than other cover boards. Understanding different types of cover boards can help you select the right one for your home. But, make sure to have the cover board installed by an experienced Huntsville roofing company. Investing in an insulation material is worth it due to increased roof protection and energy savings.
