This time of year, your home is sure to experience many summer storms. Most of them will pass by with little more than a washing of your roof. However, some of them are sure to be more intense than others. If you are worried about your Huntsville roof during these storms, there are a few things you can do to protect yourself. By simply making sure you have kept up with your outdoor maintenance on and around your roof, you can decrease the chances of the storm doing damage to your roof. Here are a few tips that can make these summer storms less worrisome.
Keep Your Roof Properly Maintained
One of the easiest ways to make sure that your roof is safer during these summer storms is to always make sure your roof is in good condition. If there is a way for water to find a way into your home, it will, even if that space for entry is extremely small. A roof that is lacking maintenance or in need of repairs, no matter how minor, may be easier to damage. If your roof needs even just a few shingles replaced, it can lead to water getting under the remaining shingles and causing problems in your home. Make sure you have a local Huntsville roofing company come out and inspect, maintain, and repair your roof annually, if not more often. The sooner you take care of even small issues, the less likely you are to suffer from a problem after any storms this summer.
Make Sure Your Gutters Are Always Clean
You need to make sure that your gutters are constantly cleaned out. This means going up on your roof, or at the very least, a ladder, and cleaning them out. You want to make sure that water flows through them easily and does not get stuck on any debris anywhere in the gutter. If you have covers over your gutters already, then you need to go up and wash them out regularly. This washes down anything that may have gotten through the tiny grates and settled on the bottom of your gutter. The more often you do this, the less debris will be settled in your gutters. If you do not have covers over your gutters, then you should consider them. They save a lot of time, hassle, and hard work. Make sure you go through and clean them up as well as you can, even scraping the bottom part of the gutter out if necessary. You do not want the sludge to back up in your downspouts, as that can make it to where the water has nowhere to drain away from your roof.
Maintain Your Yard, Too
One of the more overlooked ways of making sure to keep your roof safe during summer storms is to make sure you regularly maintain your yard. Trim away any branches that overhang your roof. These could easily come down and damage the roof itself, or end up clogging up your gutters. You want to trim any branches off that hang over your home. Plus, you want to trim them back far enough that if the wind were to blow, they wouldn’t come over your roof line. You also need to make sure to keep the leaves trimmed back so they do not fall on your roof and cause a buildup of debris on the roof or in the gutters.
