Roof LeakingA lot of homeowners are vigilant about looking up at their roofs for issues with shingles, but they do not take the time to look at the other aspects of their roof. There is more to your roof than just a sheet of shingles tacked into the roof to keep the weather out. There are gutters, soffits, flashing, and edging that need to be inspected regularly as well. If you are not able to see those from the ground, or not comfortable going up on your roof to inspect them, then you need to consider having a Huntsville roofing company come out and take a peek at them for you.

Your Gutters Do More Than Direct the Rain Off of Your Roof

While not having sheets of water streaming over every inch of your roof can be a nice perk to having gutters, this is actually done for a different reason. If the water were to fall off of your roof, straight to the ground, it would begin eroding the soil that is against the foundation of your home. The more rain that fell, the quicker this would happen. Gutters take the rain from your roof, funnel it down to your downspouts, and push it away from the foundation of your home so that it comes out at a safe distance away. This helps your home stay more stable, and helps to avoid leaks into your basement, crawlspace, or cracks in the foundation if you are on a slab.

The gutters need to be checked at least one or two times per year, ideally more often than that. However, as an absolute minimum, you should check them each spring, hopefully each fall, too. That way, the rest of the debris from winter can be cleaned out, and the leaves that fell in the fall will then be able to be removed to keep your gutters free flowing. Should you have a gutter cap to keep most of this debris out, then cleaning out your gutter is likely something you get done once per year by the installation company, and something you no longer need to worry about.

Roof Flashing Helps Keep Leaks from Getting Into Your Home, Too

You need to keep an eye on your roof flashing, too. The point of having flashing up on the roof is to take the water that does seep down between the shingles and other objects on your roof, and push it back up by way of where the water has to flow, back above the shingles and away from the roofing felt and your attic space. If the flashing rusts, it will start letting water through, and the interior of your home is going to end up wet. The problem is, this problem will start slowly at first, to where you could be getting mold up in your rafters or attic and be totally unaware of the issue unless you notice the rust on the flashing itself.

Anyone that is unable to get up on the roof to look at the different elements of the roof on their own, should look into hiring a reputable Huntsville roofing company to come out and do it for them. You need to make this a priority if you want to keep your home safe and dry. It does not take much time, and the process is typically inexpensive. However, when an issue is caught early on, the savings could be enormous over having to have the entire roof replaced after a leak got all the way through to your home.
