Do you take care of your roof each year, and inspect it each season? Or do you have a professional Huntsville roofer come in and do it for you? Either way, it is that time of year again. You want to go through and make sure that someone is looking over your roof and maintaining it so that it lasts as long as possible. There are a few things you need to take a look at in the spring each year. If you forget to check on them, it could lead to leaks down the line.

What to Look for During Spring Roof Inspections

You first want to get up on your roof and look around. What you are looking for are obvious signs of problems. This can include missing shingles or flashing, holes in the roof, or worn shingles that are obviously different from those around them. This often happens in the valleys of a roof.

After that, you want to take a look for problems that are slightly less obvious. Shingles with an edge that is starting to curl up is another problem. Roofing nails that got pushed up during the winter need addressing. They either need to be put back down and sealed, or new nails and/or shingles need to be placed in that spot. This can happen when ice pushes up under a shingle, so you should also be mindful of any potential water damage in that area.

You also want to go in and look at the condition of your roof from underneath. To do this, you need to go up into your attic. What you want to do is look for signs of water coming in. If you see any stains or water, follow it up until you find the source. Water follows the path of least resistance, so if you want to find where it started, follow it against gravity.

What to Do When You Find Problems with Your Roof

When you notice any type of problem with your roof, it is time to repair it. This means getting the supplies, going up on the roof, and fixing the problem. You may need to replace some shingles, or you may need to tack down some nails. Make sure everything you do, you seal up afterwards. The last thing you want to do is fix something, only to leave a problem in place to cause issues down the line.

Some repairs are not a good idea to do on your own. If all you need to do is tack down a nail or two and seal them up, that will only take a few minutes in most instances and you will be good to go. However, if many of your shingles need replacing, or there are soft spots on your roof, these are signs of bigger issues. That is when you need to call in the pros to come out and take a look.
